Mazda MX-5 Range Updates Announced

Auckland, 15 September 2026.  Mazda Motors of New Zealand has announced a refreshed MX-5 range, headlined by the introduction of a new Roadster SP entry grade alongside the Roadster Takami, with updates to RF Homura grade. Part of the Mazda line-up since 1989, the MX-5 continues to evolve, and now brings a smile to the face of an even broader range of drivers.

Roadster SP: A new, highly accessible entry point to the MX-5 range

The headline change is the arrival of MX-5 Roadster SP, a new entry grade for the soft-top range, created to provide an accessible and affordable entry point into open-top motoring.

The MX-5 Roadster SP is focused on pure driving enjoyment, retaining the lightweight chassis, balanced driving position and driver engagement that have defined the model since its inception. It is expected to appeal to owners who enjoy the thrill of open-top motoring in a pure, uncompromised package.  Visually the Roadster SP features 17-inch black metallic alloy wheels to complement the black fabric roof, whilst the cabin features cloth-trimmed sports seats.

SP gives more people an easier way into MX-5 ownership, without changing what has defined the nameplate for more than three decades.

Continuing to power the local Mazda MX-5 range is the SKYACTIV-G 2.0-litre, a high-revving, naturally aspirated engine that delivers 135kW and 205Nm, the Roadster SP paired with a six-speed manual transmission.

The manual gearbox variants retain Mazda's Asymmetric Limited Slip Differential (Asymmetric LSD), which varies the limiting force applied to the differential in response to acceleration, deceleration and changes in rear-wheel vertical load. This smooths turn-in behaviour, making the car easier to manoeuvre both around town and on winding roads.

Takami: Sharper and More Focused

The MX-5 Roadster Takami grade updates the previous Roadster GT, and introduces Recaro sports seats trimmed in leather and Alcantara.  Not only sportier in their appearance, they hold the driver and passenger firmly in place through corners while adding a tactile, motorsport-inspired finish to the cabin. Roadster Takami remains the grade for drivers seeking a more focused MX-5 experience.

Roadster Takami also carries forward key driving-dynamics technology first introduced on Roadster GT, including Dynamic Stability Control (DSC)-Track mode, which gives the driver maximum control by intervening only if demanded.

17-inch BBS forged alloy wheels, red Brembo brake callipers and Bilstein dampers complete the performance-focused package.

Homura: Refined and Retractable

The updated RF Homura grade continues to deliver the convenience, refinement and year-round usability of the retractable hardtop, paired with the ease of a 6-speed automatic transmission.

RF Homura remains a strong choice for drivers who want MX-5's open-air enjoyment without compromising everyday comfort.

Homura adds a touch of luxury with heated leather seat trim and a high-quality Bose audio system.

Introducing Zinc Green Metallic

Set to debut on MX-5, Zinc Green Metallic takes its inspiration from the colour and texture of zinc chromate primer, an undercoat used to enhance the durability of industrial products. It translates the rational functional beauty into a sense of toughness expressed through colour and texture.

In low-light conditions, its solid-like texture creates a tight, powerful impression, while in bright light, the delicate metallic sheen accentuates the body’s sculptural beauty, resulting in a sophisticated and modern overall appearance. To achieve this effect, the colour formulation incorporates bluish metallic flakes, with optimised particle size and alignment to deliver a cool, refined tone.

Smarter, Safer, More Connected

The new MX-5 also benefits from a series of technology upgrades designed to support the driver without interrupting the drive. Lane Keep Assist (LKA) is now standard across the range, an upgrade from the previous lane departure warning system. The Smart City Brake System (SCBS) has been enhanced with pedestrian and cyclist detection, broadening the range of scenarios in which it can help avoid or mitigate a collision. Inside, the centre display gains touchscreen functionality, making everyday interactions more intuitive without disrupting MX-5's clean, driver-focused cabin.
