For every MX-30 sold, Mazda will purchase 5 trees from Trees That Count. The native trees funded through this partnership will be planted and cared for by various communities across New Zealand. Over each vehicle's 5-year warranty term, these 5 trees will not only minimise any environmental impact from CO2 emissions, but they will significantly contribute to the ecosystems in which they are planted. You can find out more about Mazda's partnership with Trees That Count here.
The Takami Electric Vehicle qualifies for a rebate of $8,625 including GST.
Please note the Government has placed an initial rebate term of 1 July 2021 to 31 December 2021, so the timing of vehicle arrival and registration needs to be factored when assessing the rebate and its amount. Refer HERE for more information.
At Mazda, "MX" has always stood for models that go their own way and convey new values without being tied to the conventional ideas of the present – such as the legendary MX-5 sportscar! The First-Ever Mazda MX-30 represents new values and every detail has been re-thought.
- 5 Year / 100,000 km Genuine Scheduled Servicing (whichever occurs first).
- 5 Year / Unlimited km New Vehicle Warranty^.
^Including a separate 8 Year / 160,000 km Battery Warranty (whichever occurs first), at 70% of original battery capacity (for MX-30 Takami Electric model).
- 5 Year Unlimited km Mazda On Call Roadside Assistance Programme
*The Mazdacare support programme is effective from the first day of vehicle registration. Visit mazda.co.nz/mazdacare for more details.
Your purchase of the Mazda MX-30 will contribute 5 native trees from the Trees That Count programme to plant in the “Mazda Native Forest”. These trees will not only minimise any environmental impact from CO2 emissions, but they will significantly contribute to the ecosystems in which they’re planted. You can find out more about Mazda's partnership with Trees That Count .
Since a lot of an EV’s CO2 emissions result from the production of its battery, we focused on actual driving behaviour and decided not to make the battery larger than necessary. In our opinion, the 35.5kWh capacity strikes a good balance between CO2 emissions, driving distance and driving dynamics that delivers peace of mind. Mazda’s “right-sizing” philosophy takes a number of key factors into account, including:
1 - Minimising Weight. Engaging Driving Dynamics is a hallmark trait in Mazda vehicle development, where “weight is viewed as the enemy of performance”. Minimising battery weight provides better handling performance, as well as better e-consumption.
2 - Minimising CO2. Mazda measures CO2 from a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) perspective, which covers CO2 output during materials extraction, battery and vehicle manufacturing, vehicle usage, vehicle disposal and materials recycling. Simply put, larger and heavier batteries produce more LCA CO2 than smaller batteries. As such, rather than employ larger 60-70kWh batteries as seen in other vehicles in this class, the Mazda MX-30 employs a "right-sized" 35.5kWh battery for a lower LCA CO2 output.
3 - Customer Usage. As a Small SUV, the Mazda MX-30 will primarily be driven in urban environments for daily commutes, with the occasional longer trip. Mazda has identified that there’s no need to encumber the Mazda MX-30 will additional weight (and higher Life Cycle Assessment CO2), when the average daily commute in New Zealand is well under 50kms*
4 - Charging Efficiency. A “right-sized” battery charges quickly and is more efficient for everyday needs. For the occasional longer trips, New Zealand has an extensive public charging network that ensures the MX-30 can be charged quickly, during important rest breaks.

The lithium-ion batteries are considered to be particularly powerful. Just like with an Internal Combustion Engine vehicle, factors like the road conditions, temperature and driving style will all have an impact on longevity and performance. Mazda provides an 8-year / 160,000km battery warranty (whichever occurs first), at 70% of original battery capacity. This demonstrates our confidence with this technology. In case of an unexpected malfunction, or reduced capacity (below 70%), the warranty covers all battery repairs and/or replacement.
Normal use of the vehicle (and its numerous functions) has no effect on the battery. Overcharging is also not possible, so there is no need to worry if you leave your vehicle plugged in overnight. Please note that battery performance in daily use depends on factors such as weather, driving speed, payload, road conditions and electrical systems usage.
As with a conventional vehicle, where you should avoid running the tank empty, it is better not to let it get that far. But there's no need to worry, because the First-Ever Mazda MX-30 keeps you informed of the remaining range at all times, as well as average energy consumption (kWh per 100km), and warns you well in advance when it's time to start using a charging station or alternative energy source. In this instance the car will enter “turtle mode”, whereby a turtle warning lamp will illuminate in the instrument cluster when the battery is low, and vehicle speed will be limited.
Your Mazda MX-30 is also backed by a 5-Year Mazda On Call Roadside Assistance programme (*Refer to Mazdacare section for more details).
Batteries can get hot due to high air temperatures or the heat they generate themselves. If they are exposed to high temperatures for a long time, batteries can deteriorate and there is sometimes a need to restrict driving output or charging. Because we want you to have the full power and driving experience of the First-Ever Mazda MX-30 we have adopted a refrigerant cooling method that proactively cools the battery.
This is the sound of the battery cooling system operating and is perfectly normal.
As with a conventional car, the range and efficiency of the First-Ever Mazda MX-30 depends on road and weather conditions.
Fully charged, the First-Ever Mazda MX-30 offers a driving range of approximately 200km*. That easily covers most daily mobility needs. Mazda has chosen a battery that is lighter and therefore requires less energy, yet still offers a range that is appropriate for most day-to-day trips – to work, school, home and leisure activities.
*224km combined range (NEDC).
You can make better use of the range by driving economically. Experienced e-car drivers use as many opportunities as possible to recuperate energy. With the First-Ever Mazda MX-30, you can easily adjust the recuperation power using the steering wheel paddles.
Yes, the remaining range is clearly displayed in the instrument cluster. In addition, the average kWh usage per 100km is displayed, meaning that drivers can calculate their current usage (and impact on range).
AC (or alternating current) is the type of current supplied to our homes and work by the national electricity grid. AC charging is the most convenient way of charging as AC power is readily available. We recommend installing a fast-charge 6.6kW AC Wallbox (Mode 3) to your home for regular charging. Alternatively, in emergency situations, a household 3-pin socket can be used with an approved 2.4kW ‘trickle-charge’ cable (Mode 2 with ICCB).
DC (or direct current) enables faster charging, because it uses a higher voltage. This type of electricity is only accessible via specialised DC chargers, usually found on motorways and some large retailers. All DC chargers will have cables with specific charging connectors tethered to them. To charge using this current, Mazda uses a CCS (Combined Charging System) type connector.
It’s easy, and the same procedure as with every other electric vehicle. You plug it into your Wallbox® at home or at any public charging station in your area. Using the Wallbox® is highly recommended, as it offers you the convenience of charging from the comfort of your own home. You may also plug it into a normal 3-pin electric socket, although this is the slowest method of charging and is not recommended as a regular way of charging.
No, this is available to purchase as an accessory – only if required. Instead, Mazda New Zealand is offering a fast-charge AC Wallbox® (value $2,000) with every Mazda MX-30*.
*The fast-charge AC Wallbox® is the Wallbox® Pulsar Plus model. This offer is only available for first-time registrations of the Mazda MX-30. Please note that this offer excludes the price of installation - contact your local Mazda dealer for details of recommended Wallbox® installers in your area.
With regard to cables, we recommend that owners consider this after living with a home fast-charge AC Wallbox® (and public charge stations). Expert advice to Mazda is that cables are rarely used (if at all) when a home fast-charge AC Wallbox® is installed. If cables are required, Mazda offers two cable accessories: (1) 2.4kW 3-pin portable trickle charger, or (2) 6.6kW fast-charge AC cable.
When charging the First-Ever Mazda MX-30, up to 80% can be charged in approximately 30-40 minutes via the DC CCS connection (50kW). When charging with a 6.6kW fast-charge AC Wallbox®, the battery can be fully charged within 5 hours. We recommend a Wallbox® for comfortable charging at home.
The vehicle can be charged at any public charging station with a CCS or Type 2 charging plug (Mode 4). It can also be charged at home with a Wallbox® (Mode 3) or at a household 3-pin socket (Mode 2).
