Mazda recently launched a special edition Axela Sport (Mazda3 hatch) to celebrate its 90th anniversary. Introduced for the 2004 model year, the Axela replaced the Mazda Familia (323 or Protege) with its performance, handling, styling and interior being described as feeling like a more expensive sport sedan despite its value-oriented price.
A more performance-oriented version of the Mazda3 is marketed as Mazdaspeed3 in North America and Mazda3 MPS in Europe, Australia and New Zealand.
