World-class safety underpins the first-ever Mazda CX-3

9 April 2015

The first-ever Mazda CX-3 is set to challenge everything kiwi drivers have come to expect in the small SUV class as it boasts SKYACTIV advancements and anenviable array of cutting-edge safety technology.

The combination of passive safety enhancements with state of the art intuitive safety technologies form part of Mazda’s philosophy on safety, making each new Mazda an extension of its driver and assisting them in making better safety decisions.

Andrew Clearwater, Managing Director of Mazda New Zealand believes that the first-ever CX-3 is a benchmark for the category in every aspect and safety is certainly one of those. “It is not just about the safety of the driver and passengers, other motorists and pedestrians are equally important.

The enhancing of our SKYACTIV platform and a range of i-ACTIVSENSE technology for the first-ever CX-3 has resulted in a vehicle underpinned by world class safety,” says Clearwater.

“Cutting edge safety features and five-star accolades have become synonymous with Mazda vehicles. It is paramount in everything we do and the first-ever Mazda CX-3 is testament to that.”

SKYACTIV SAFETY

Dedicated efforts to provide occupant safety include the ingenious use of structures and materials that effectively absorb and disperse impact force from the front, sides, or rear to suppress cabin deformation, as well as to make the cabin itself stronger.

As a result, the CX-3 achieves a lightweight structure while at the same time delivering collision safety performance capable of earning the highest level ratings in tests performed.

Through the use of stronger materials, continuous members and reinforced joints, the highly rigid yet lightweight SKYACTIV-Body is more secure on all sides; crushable zones designed to effectively absorb impact energy from the rear better protect the cabin and fuel tank in a wide variety of rear-end collisions.

Inside cabin safety is enhanced with a list of features including a steering shaft designed to mitigate impact force and door armrests that absorb impact energy. An enhanced front seat structure cushions in the event of impact and rear seats are reinforced to stop luggage intrusion into the cabin. Reversing camera along with front, side and curtain SRS airbags  as well as Hill Launch Assist and ABS Brakes with EBD and EBA, all comes as standard across the range.

The cabin of the first-ever Mazda CX-3 features an impressive selection of state of the art information, entertainment and connectivity systems, designed for convenient and above all safe operation.

Split into two segments – a safe-driving zone – to enable effortless focus on the road with all key driving-related controls positioned to allow relaxed operation. The Active Driving Display on the GSX and Limited models is a head-up display unit which shows the most important real-time driving data directly in the driver’s forward field of view.

An infotainment zone with an innovative new Human Machine Interface (HMI) designed for extremely safe and user-friendly interactivity houses the MZD Connect system, a 7-inch WVGA touchscreen and rotary commander to control everything from navigation and communication to social media.

i-ACTIVSENSE

Active safety measures to help identify potential risks early on and reduce any chance of damage or injury is possible with the adoption of Mazda’s i-ACTIVSENSE advanced safety technologies. These enable the driver to enjoy every outing, whether driving on city streets, on the motorway or open roads.

Increasingly across the models more of Mazda’s i-ACTIVSENSE Safety Technologies are present.

The GSX is equipped with Rear Cross Traffic Alert(RCTA),which warns of other vehicles or pedestrians crossing from behind when reversing, andBlind Spot Monitoring (BSM) which warns of vehicles approaching in the mirrors’ blind spot.

The first-ever Mazda CX-3 Limited features an array ofi-ACTIVSENSE Safety Technologies, including Land Departure Warning (LDW), High Beam Control (HBC) and Smart City Brake Support – Forward (SCBS-F), which is a must for travelling around town or in congested traffic.

Two types of engine are available for the first-ever Mazda CX-3. One is the SKYACTIV-G 2.0L, a petrol engine that delivers light and spirited driving pleasure on city or suburban streets with 109kW at 6,000rpm and 192Nm at 2,800rpm delivering a frugal combined fuel economy of 6.1l/100 km (FWD) or 6.7l/100 km (AWD). The other is the newly developed SKYACTIV-D 1.5L clean diesel engine with a spectacular 270Nm at 1,600 – 2,500 and 77kW at 4,000rpm and an even more frugal 5.1l/100 km and only 137 g/km CO2 emissions.
