MAZDA RECALLS 16,182 VEHICLES IN NEW ZEALAND FOR POSSIBLE AIRBAG FAULT

Mazda New Zealand has announced a recall for 16,182 New Zealand-new Mazda6, RX-8, E-Series Van, B-Series and BT-50 Utilities for a possible fault with the driver or front seat passenger airbags

The recall is due to the potential abnormal deployment of the airbags during a motor vehicle accident and expands on earlier recalls already carried out on Takata-supplied airbags.  Takata also supplies airbags to a number of other Japanese and European motor manufacturers, which have been the subject of recalls in recent years.

A breakdown of the vehicles subject to this recall in New Zealand:

Mazda6 model years between 2002 - 2008

Total 12,660 vehicles

RX-8 model years between 2003 - 2008

Total 142 vehicles

E-Series Van model years between 2004 - 2008

Total 398 vehicles

B-Series & BT-50 model years between  2003 – 2006

Total 2,979 vehicles

From the models listed above, there are 14,163 New Zealand-new vehicles requiring a Driver’s Airbag recall and 2,019 which require both the passenger and driver’s side Airbag recall.

Mazda New Zealand is also investigating second-hand, used Japanese imported Mazda vehicles that might be affected by this recall.

John Van der Velden, Mazda National Service Manager, advises “The driver and front seat passenger airbag inflators of all affected vehicles will be replaced with a new part as a precautionary measure.  Mazda New Zealand is not aware of any incidents in New Zealand where airbags have deployed abnormally in Mazda vehicles during an accident.”

Owners of the affected vehicles, who have been identified through motor registration data, will be contacted by Mazda New Zealand at the earliest opportunity.

More information will be released via mazda.co.nz as it becomes available. Please contact 0800 800 626 for any other enquiries.
