New-Generation CX-5 Lifts The Bar Again for 2015

13 February 2015

The CX-5, which introduced the world to Mazda’s striking KODO design and ground-breaking SKYACTIV Technology three years ago, has had a dramatic makeover for 2015 with an extensive list of enhancements that further extends category benchmarks.

Since its launch in 2012 the CX-5 has become New Zealand’s favourite medium-SUV and named the country’s Best in Class by AA / New Zealand Motoring Writers Guild for the last three years running.

The 2015 update for the CX-5 delivers a highly evolved SUV, with further refinements to the KODO Design, SKYACTIV Technology and i-ACTIVSENSE Safety programme as well as new features and innovations carried across from the Mazda3 which was recently recognised as the 2014 New Zealand Car of the Year- including MZD Connect which keeps drivers entertained, informed and in touch with the world.

Mazda New Zealand Managing Director Andrew Clearwater says the original CX-5 made an unprecedented impact in New Zealand and the new model, with its incredible advancements and design refinements, is set to do it all over again.

“This vehicle is more than just a SUV. It’s a whole new way of seeing the SUV.  The beauty of the launch model was that it was fun to drive, and it was just as at home on urban streets as it was on New Zealand’s windy, off the beaten track-type roads. The new CX-5 makes that driving experience even more enjoyable while being one of the safest vehicles on the road.”

Extensive changes were made to the interior of the car with a sophisticated new front and rear console design, wider door storage pockets, adjustable cup-holders with storage bin, and 3D meter cluster dials.

And with innovative new equipment such as an Electric Parking Brake, ‘Sport’ Mode Drive Selection (petrol models) and MZD Connect’s 7-inch colour touchscreen and commander dial as standard across all models, the interior design has been refined to accommodate these features in a comtemporary yet easy-to-operate way.

The exterior presents a new –generation grille with five flat-profiled horizontal bars, which provides a much stronger nose and wider stance. The fog-lamp bezel design has also been updated, along with the exterior mirrors, which are smaller but with larger side-turn lamps, and a low-profile shark-fin antenna has been added.

Engineering improvements have been made to ensure optimum driver and passenger comfort. For example, the front suspension now features a bushing structure that eases the effects of small vibrations and larger jolts at higher speeds.

In addition, advancements have been made to NVH with cabin noise reduced by 1.2 dB (-13%) at high speeds. This is also helped by the positioning of sound insulation materials – most notably to the dashboard, bonnet, headliner, doors and boot floor, as well as improved sealing around the doors and frame structure and thicker glass for the rear windows (from 3.1mm to 3.5mm).

To reduce vibration and increase comfort the front seats now have a Pullmaflex  suspension mat for the seatback and high-vibration absorbing urethane for the seat cushion (as adopted in the Mazda3 and Mazda2).

Similar to the recently released 2015 Mazda6, the most revolutionary feature of the new CX-5 is the improved capability of the i-ACTIVSENSE SAFETY system., which gives drives another set of eyes for improved confidence on today’s busy roads.

With Mazda’s approach to safety based on expanding the range of conditions under which the driver can operate their vehicle safely, and therefore enhance the driving experience, i-ACTIVSENSE SAFETY technology is essential for recognising hazards, avoiding collisions and reducing the severity of accidents.

The 2015 CX-5 Limited model is the second vehicle after the new Mazda6 to include sophisticated i-ACTIVSENSE technologies, such as the impressive Adaptive LED Headlights (ALH), Lane-Keep Assist (LAS), Driver Attention Alert (DAA) and Smart City Brake Support – Reverse (SCBS-R).

ALH has been developed to achieve daytime visibility for night-time driving through three core functions: glare-free high beams, wide-range low beams which expand the illumination area, and Highway Mode, where the distance of illumination area is extended for driving at higher speeds (above 95km/hour).

The Lane-Keep Assist System (LAS), provides both audible warnings and steering intervention if required when you deviate from your marked lane.

The new CX-5 also has the ability to “learn” your driving style with the Driver Attention Alert (DAA) system after 20 minutes of continuous driving at 65 km/hour or more. If the driver then deviates from this style, the DAA system will prompt the driver, audibly and visually, to take a rest to prevent an accident.

CX-5 also adopts enhanced Smart City Brake Support functionality so that it now operates both forward and in reverse directions, utilising sensors in the front and rear bumper to detect obstructions in front and behind the vehicle and automatically applies the brakes and restricts engine torque to help lessen the impact of front or rear-end collisions.

The GSX grade is also well equipped with i-ACTIVSENSE safety features including Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM), Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) and Smart Brake Support – Forward (SCBS-F) to assist the driver.

Blind Spot Monitoring warns of vehicles approaching in your blind spot and warns you with an LED icon on the relevant door mirror and audibly if you have your indicator on.  Rear Cross Traffic Alert assists when backing to warn of vehicles or pedestrians are approaching from either side of your vehicle when you are in reverse.

The 2015 CX-5 with a 5-star ANCAP safety rating will be available with your choice of 2.0L, 2.5L petrol or 2.2L Diesel SKYACTIV engines providing excellent fuel economy without compromising performance in eight exterior colours and features the all-new Sonic Silver Metallic colour. In addition Titanium Flash Mica, as featured on Mazda3, Mazda2 and CX-9 carlines, has been introduced to the CX-5 range.

To further improve owner value, mazdacare continues to be offered as standard with every new Mazda CX-5 – a commitment Mazda makes to ensure each new vehicle continues to perform in optimum condition.  mazdacare comprises a Mazda Genuine Factory Warranty and Mazda On Call Roadside Assistance for a 3 year, unlimited kilometre period and Genuine Mazda Servicing for 3 years/100,000 km (whichever occurs first) at no extra cost.
