Mazda2 Redefines Style And Class

8 December 2014

A Completely New Direction for sub-compact vehicles has arrived with the release of the all-new Mazda2 – one of outstanding presence and vitality that will surpass all current notions of what is on offer in this class.

Just launched in New Zealand this month, the all-new Mazda2 is a striking expression of the KODO-Soul of Motion - design language, which has been refined through application to larger cars within the Mazda showroom and now concentrated to suit the compact Mazda2.

Great things certainly come in small packages; the exterior design creates a dynamic sense of forward momentum engendered by concentrating energy into its compact body and presents a physique with a powerful stance.

Andrew Clearwater, Managing Director of Mazda New Zealand describes the design of the all-new Mazda2 as a triumph and quite simply stunning.

“The Mazda2 has always well- acclaimed for its outstanding styling, so we were very eager to see how the design team would make something so perfect even more so with the all-new vehicle.

“At first sight, the car is captivating and draws your attention; and once you experience it firsthand you will see all the effort and expertise that has gone into redesigning every part from the ground up,” says Clearwater.

A dynamic silhouette has been created by positioning the compact cabin toward the rear of the lower body’s forward-inclined lines.  It has a more powerful stance than its predecessor with large wheels positioned as close as possible to the four corners of the body to create a short overhang and achieve a wide track.

The look of condensed energy created by the line of the muscular rear shoulders is forcefully released as the character line travels toward the front of the body.  The overall effect of this body design is that of explosive forward momentum.

KODO has given the all-new Mazda2 what is being described as a mature, yet lively expression with contours that are full of vitality.  New LED headlamps adopt a thick, round light guide surrounding the centre, resembling the pupil of a wild animal’s eye.  While the signature wing has evolved further to give an even more powerful three-dimensional look. The rear lamps now wrap onto the tailgate to create a slim, sharp appearance.

Inside the all-new Mazda2 every detail has dramatically evolved with the aim of becoming a new global benchmark for interior design - a finely crafted interior effusing a feeling of quality that surpasses the class.

The interior establishes a balanced contrast between a cockpit zone that enables the driver to concentrate on driving and a passenger seat zone that provides an open-feeling space.

The display and control systems are positioned in accordance with human-oriented design based on the Heads-up Cockpit concept meaning the cockpit zone peaks in height at the top of the meter hood and wraps symmetrically around the driver.

Every detail of the interior benefits from the careful selection of a high-quality yet playful blend of materials, including satin chrome, high-gloss colour panels, carbon-fiber-finish grain, and stitched leather.

The ergonomically centre-focused driver’s space is designed to enable effortless focus on the road with all key driving-related controls positioned to allow relaxed operation.  GSX and Limited models feature MZD Connect enabling one-touch access to all operating information from a single screen, while Limited models add an Active Driver Display showing vehicle speed and other important driving or navigation information.

Challenging everything in the sub-compact class on all accounts, Mazda has equipped the all-new Mazda2 with an enviable array of innovative active safety technology and comprehensive passive safety innovations.

The all-new Mazda2 is powered by the new SKYACTIV-G 1.5 petrol engine – a lightweight compact and highly efficient direct-injection gasoline engine that achieves excellent fuel economy while producing powerful torque. Mazda’s i-Stop technology delivers smooth stopping and starting along with excellent fuel economy.  With a frugal combined fuel economy of 4.9L and 5.2L/100km and outstanding emission levels of: 114g – 121g/km (respectively 6AT-MT).

All SKYACTIV-G power plants offered here in NZ feature ultra-high 13:1 compression ratios and 4-2-1 exhaust systems for an exciting combination of power, torque and fuel economy.

The smooth SKYACTIV-Drive six-speed automatic transmission available on all grades has the addition of a new Sport Mode – Drive selection, and the crisp SKYACTIV-MT six-speed manual is an option for the GLX and GSX grades.

The all-new Mazda2 is now available in three grades with the addition of the luxurious Limited grade, and a stunning selection of eight colour choices including two new tones - Dynamic Blue Mica and Smoky Rose Mica.
