All-new Mazda2 Is Safe And Smart

8 December 2014

The all-new Mazda2 is a car with heightened awareness, setting a new benchmark in safety and challenging everything in the sub-compact class with an enviable array of cutting-edge safety technology.

Just launched in New Zealand, the all-new Mazda2 embraces a safety philosophy that is focused on minimising the possibilities of an accident by identifying potential risks early, and maximising the ways in which the driver can operate the vehicle safely.

Andrew Clearwater, Managing Director of Mazda New Zealand says the all-new Mazda2 is ideally suited to driving on New Zealand’s demanding roads as well as around town in busy traffic.

“The all-new Mazda2 gives drivers the tools they need to identify potential dangers on the road, make well-informed decisions and act early – it’s like having an extra set of eyes, giving you greater confidence behind the wheel.

“The combination of i-ACTIVSENSE and our new and improved SKYACTIV-BODY, which has been developed and refined to suit our smallest car, reinforces our commitment to excellence in safety performance and dispels any notion that investment in this area is proportionate to the size of vehicle.”

Mazda’s i-ACTIVSENSE advanced safety technologies are what makes the all-new Mazda2 not just one of the safest cars Mazda has produced, but also one of the smartest.

With sensing devices, such as milliwave radar units, and cameras that alert the driver to potential hazards, it allows them to take action to prevent collisions and accidents from happening.

A key feature in the GSX and Limited models is the Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) system which detects vehicles approaching from the blind spot areas at the sides and rear of the car and issues an alert to the driver.

The Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) system equipped to the GSX and Limited models alerts the driver when it detects vehicles, pedestrians or cyclists approaching from either side when the driver is reversing – adding an extra layer of reassurance when backing out of a garage or parking space.

The all-new Mazda2 Limited model features a an extensive range of i-ACTIVSENSE safety technologies including High Beam Control System (HBC), which not only improves visibility at night but automatically switches between the headlamps’ high and low beams, as well as the Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS) and Smart City Brake Support (SCBS).

SCBS is particualrly important when driving around town at low speeds with the SCBS system helping to prevent nose to tail accidents, or at the very least reducing the amount of damage if an accident does occur.

Avoiding hazards is part of everyday driving and in the all-new Mazda2 Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) and Traction Control System (TCS) ensure control is maintained and the vehicle can be steered around any obstacle and under a range of surface conditions.  ABS and Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), which optimises braking force according to the load on board, means the Mazda2 can be bought to a halt quickly and safely.

Mazda’s high-rigidity SKYACTIV-BODY, which earned wide praise on the CX-5, Mazda6 and Mazda3, has been further evolved for use on a sub-compact car making the all-new Mazda2 both stronger and lighter than the previous model.

The smaller size of the all-new Mazda2 presented its challenges compared with its larger siblings, however cutting-edge materials and structural innovations as well as increased use of high-tensile and ultra-high-tensile steel were used to compensate for the car’s reduced crush space and make the cabin even stronger.

The beauty of the SKYACTIV-BODY’s multi-load path structure is that it absorbs and disperses impact force from any direction to suppress cabin deformation and deliver a high level of collision safety performance.

Structural changes and strengthening to protect against frontal, side and rear impact means the underbody and sides of the all-new Mazda2 cabin are approximately 15 per cent stronger than the previous model. These include strengthened impact bars inside the doors, crushable zones in the rear to effectively absorb impact in rear-end collisions.

Inside cabin safety is enhanced further with the driver and front passenger seats equipped with front and side airbags, and curtain airbags help provide protection for those in the front and rear seats.

The all-new Mazda2 is powered by the new SKYACTIV-G 1.5 petrol engine – a lightweight compact and highly efficient direct-injection gasoline engine that achieves excellent fuel economy while producing powerful torque. Mazda’s i-Stop technology delivers smooth stopping and starting along with excellent fuel economy.  With a frugal combined fuel economy of 4.9L and 5.2L/100km and outstanding emission levels of: 114g – 121g/km (respectively 6AT-6MT).

All SKYACTIV-G power plants offered here in NZ feature ultra-high 13:1 compression ratios and 4-2-1 exhaust systems for an exciting combination of power, torque and fuel economy.  The smooth SKYACTIV-Drive six-speed automatic transmission available on all grades has the addition of a new Sport Mode – Drive selection, and the crisp SKYACTIV-MT six-speed manual is an option for the GLX and GSX grades.

The all-new Mazda2 is now available in three grades with the addition of the luxurious Limited grade, and a stunning selection of eight colour choices including two new tones - Dynamic Blue Mica and Smoky Rose Mica.
