2014 A Sky High Year for Mazda New Zealand

8 January 2015

2014 ended on a high for Mazda New Zealand with the company recording its best December on record (excluding rentals) delivering a 6.9 market share (excluding rental) and 4th place for the month.

December was incredibly the company's 11th consecutive month of record retail sales with September delivering Mazda New Zealand its biggest ever sales month. This has seen the company achieve 5th place for new vehicle sales in 2014 with a market share of 7 percent.

Andrew Clearwater, Managing Director Mazda New Zealand said the company was confident in January that 2014 was going to be a big year for the industry but it has far exceeded our expectations.

"To have 11 months of record sales is outstanding. It really has been an amazing year for Mazda New Zealand and demonstrates very clearly that within our vehicle line-up we have a model to appeal to a wide range of the motoring public. The result is also a tribute to the work of the Mazda New Zealand team and our dealer network across the country."

While all models in the Mazda range performed well, special mention should be made of the Mazda CX-5 which maintained its position as the number one selling SUV in its segment. For the third consecutive year it also won the Best in Class Small/Medium SUV category at the prestigious AA/New Zealand Motoring Writers Guild Car of the Year Awards. Along with the Mazda3 it featured in the top 15 selling passenger vehicles for the year, while the BT-50 was in the top 10 selling commercial vehicles.

It was the all new Mazda3, launched in March, which really stole the show in 2014. Not only did the vehicle achieve very strong sales but was the big winner during the awards season in December where it won the following:

  • The AA and New Zealand Motoring Writer's Guild – New Zealand Car of the Year
  • The AA and New Zealand Motoring Writers Guild Best in Class – Compact Car
  • New Zealand Herald 'Driven' – 2014 Car of the Year and Best Compact Car
  • National Business Review – Supreme Car of The Year
  • Company Vehicle – Small Business Car of the Year
  • The AA People's Choice – Car of The Year
  • Fairfax Media - Top Car Range

Andrew Clearwater says "We knew the Mazda3 was a winner and to see this recognised by New Zealand motoring media is fantastic and a tribute the great job the Mazda designers and engineers' in Japan have done in bringing this car to market."

2015 looks like it will be another exciting year. 2014 was the industry's biggest year on record with new vehicle sales of 126,000 and it is predicted 2015 sales will reach 127-128,000 levels.

"From Mazda's perspective it will be another very busy year. We have just launched the all new Mazda2 (Named 2014 Car of the Year in Japan) and its creating a lot of interest in the market. In coming months we will be launching a brand new model, the Mazda CX-3, along with upgrades to other models. The Mazda team have had a chance to catch their breath over summer and are ready for another exciting year," concluded Clearwater.
