Since 1960 when Mazda released its first passenger car, the R360 Coupe, and had it immediately hailed for its minimalist form and great practicality Mazda designers have continued chasing perfection in design. In recent years this passion for design in Concept Cars has revolutionised all other Mazda models, both inside and out.
Externally this has taken form in the development of a uniquely sporty character that is now synonymous with the Mazda brand. While internally the notion of "Zoom-Zoom" driving pleasure has led directly to roomier cabin spaces as well as further engine advances, lighter chassis weights and greater fuel efficiencies.

KODO Design Language
By 2010 the Mazda designers were ready to further refine the instantaneous movement look developed in the earlier Nagare Design Language by adding the expression of a faster, more forceful movement and to include a more soulful element. This is embodied in the new design language of ‘KODO – Soul of Motion’ and it represents the next generation of Mazda design.

NAGARE Design Language
In 2005, under the direction of global design director Laurens van den Acker, the challenge given to his team was to invent a novel means of registering motion in vehicles whether they were moving or still.
