The Coupe-like One

30 November 2007, Conquest Magazine

When the car industry runs out of genres to work in, it just creates some more.

The crossover segment is already a blend of roadgoing family car and rugged off-roader design elements, but Mazda has taken the concept on a rather strange turn by introducing coupe style cues into the equation.

The amazing looking CX-7 has five doors like a wagon, high ground clearance like an SUV and a sweeping windscreen and low roofline, just like a sports coupe.

Based on the Mazda6 platform and powered by a version of the direct-injection 2.3-litre turbo engine from Mazda3 and Mazda6 MPS models, the low-slung high-riding Mazda is a treat on the tarmac.

Note that it doesn't actually wear the prestigious 'MPS' acronym: the engine is detuned by 17kw and employs a different turbocharger in the CX-7 - changes designed to smooth out the power delivery and increase bottom-end torque. To make it less manic, in other words.

Dull it's not, especially with the thrusting 2.3-litre turbo engine from the Mazda6 MPS sedan. The CX-7's acceleration isn't in the MPS-league - it weighs 1745kg. But it's still very exciting, with peak torque on tap at 2500rp and a slick five-speed automatic gearbox taking care of the cog changes.

Up front, the CX-7's cockpit-style cabin and low-set seating position are intended to remind you of a sports car. It comes with six airbags, full leather upholstery and a thumping Bose stereo system.
