Mazda posts record market share in 2009

11 January 2010

Mazda New Zealand had a tremendous finish to 2009 by once again taking third place in the market for December with 10.9% market share

The stellar December result was achieved through strong sales of the Mazda3 and Mazda6 which along with Mazda’s other passenger models took Mazda to second place overall in the passenger segment. Mazda3 was the second most popular model sold in December. While the Mazda6 remains the best selling four cylinder medium sized vehicle for the year.

The 2009 calendar year result shows Mazda further consolidating its fourth position in the market posting a record 8.1% market share for the year and caps off ten years of consecutive growth for Mazda.

“We are extremely pleased with such a strong result which is a credit to the Mazda New Zealand team and our Mazda dealers. To perform so well in such a challenging market is an achievement to be proud of,” said Andrew Clearwater, Managing Director, Mazda New Zealand.

“There is no doubt that the market has experienced some tough times in the past year but Mazda has continued to meet the needs of the New Zealand motorists by offering a lineup of stylish and affordable vehicles.”

The Mazda2, Mazda3 and Mazda6 all have the maximum 5-star safety rating in the stringent European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP) and have all featured in the Motor Industry Association’s Top 15 selling models throughout 2009.

The Mazda3 was launched in April 2009 and won numerous awards including AutoCar/AMI Compact Car of the Year and Company Vehicle Small Car of the Year in New Zealand.

“We introduced the new generation Mazda3 in April and it was always going to play an important part in our portfolio. The fact that we sold more Mazda3s in 2009 than in 2008 despite the market being down speaks volumes.”
