Activematic (Sequential Shift Automatic) Transmission

The Mazda Activematic transmissions are engineered to deliver the optimum balance in acceleration, minimal shift lag, ride comfort, quietness and fuel economy.

The system allows the driver to choose between standard automatic and a sequential-shift manual mode where gear selections can be made by the driver.

Featured in the Mazda6 and MX-5, Active Adaptive Shift (AAS) control provides a heightened linear and lively driving feel. The control system automatically selects gears not only in accordance with the upward or downward slope of the road via a slope-control function, but also in accordance with its evaluation of the road's twistiness and the driver's intentions.

Also featured in the MX-5 is the Direct Activematic (DAM) function. This allows drivers to shift down gears (using the steering wheel shift controls) even when in the standard automatic mode.

DAM was specifically designed for three common situations: decelerating using engine braking on a downhill road, accelerating after decelerating into a corner, and overtaking another vehicle. It's all about making the driving experience easier and more fun.
